The
~Highways Agency~ was criticised this week over its handling of an incident which saw a motorway closed after a van burst into flames on it.
Firefighters closed the M11 between junctions 6 and 7 after a van which had broken down carrying oxy-acetylene gas cylinders burst into flames and ignited an adjacent lorry. The agency was criticised by motorists coming from Essex that became entangled in subsequent tailbacks, who claimed they were not given the same advance warning about the closure as those coming from London.
Regional director for the
~Highways Agency~ John Pearman, said the agency had done ‘everything it could’, posting alerts on the M40, M25, M4, A3, A1(M), M20, and M23. Those approaching on local authority-controlled roads would not have access to real-time warnings, he added.
