Agency awards £45M contract for winter fleet

The Highways Agency has awarded a £45M winter service contract, which will see a new fleet of winter vehicles on the road by next winter.

Awarded jointly to Schmidt and Romaquip, the contract is for state-of-the-art snow-clearers and spreaders using technology to reduce the amount of salt on the roads, while still keeping them safe.

The framework contract will be made available to local authorities which want to renew their fleets, aiming to demonstrate that Gershon efficiency savings can be achieved through central and local government working together.

Martin Hobbs, the HA’s national winter service delivery manager, said: ‘This is a significant investment and will enable us to improve the level of service for road-users, while, at the same time, reducing running costs and ensuring a cleaner environment with less waste and greener engines.’

The contract involves spreaders and snowploughs mounted on the latest technology, EGR Euro 4, MAN TGM chassis, with Tipmatic gearbox and auxiliary cab heating. The Schmidt Stratos pre-wet spreaders have a hopper capacity of 6.15m3 mounted on 18t, four-by-four chassis, and 9.25m3 on the 26t, six-by-four chassis. In addition, specialist spreaders and sprayers distributing potassium acetate and brine will be supplied.

All vehicles will be fitted with innovative, on-board weighing systems. The high-speed, heavy-duty snowploughs have a clearing width of 3m.
