Affluent borough residents recognise travelling in club has class

The Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea has increased the number of car club bays in the borough from seven to 88, as part of an initiative to reduce congestion.
The borough says it is the first in London to make ‘pay as you go driving’ a reality for all its residents, of whom, the majority live within a five-minute walk of a car club bay. Car clubs enable motorists to pick and choose exactly when they use a vehicle, and a car can be booked either online or over the phone. Research suggests that at least five cars are taken off the road or not bought for every one car club vehicle provided.
Councillor Daniel Moylan, deputy leader and cabinet member for transportation, said: ‘The club is not only a financially-attractive alternative to public ownership, but by sharing a vehicle, the number of cars on the road will be reduced, helping cut pollution, traffic and parking stress.’ The Kensington & Chelsea car club scheme is a multiple-operator scheme, meaning three companies – CityCarClub, StreetCar and ZipCar, will be running a service on-street, in competition with each other. One-third of the car club vehicles in the borough will be petrol-electric hybrid vehicles, provided by City Car Club.
