~Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council~ has become the first authority in Britain to install an emergency alert system on lighting columns.
Working with Amey, as part of its private-finance initiative contract for streetlighting, the council is piloting the amberwatch initiative in three test locations. The two-line LED messaging system could let emergency planners pass vital information to members of the public in real-time situations.
Installations were supplied free of charge to the council by 247outdoor, and generate funding through advertising revenue from six-sheet posters sited underneath the emergency messaging display. Walsall council will be the first advertiser, encouraging recycling and warnings over dropping chewing gum.
