Accidents fall but fatalities rise

Northamptonshire County Council has exceeded government road safety targets for reducing the number of killed or seriously injured (KSIs) casualties in the county, but the proportion of fatal accidents rose last year.
New figures for 2006 from the Northamptonshire casualty reduction partnership show a 43% drop in KSIs since 1994-98 – when the government targets were set – and a 14% reduction on the previous year’s figures. However, the number of fatal accidents rose to 74 cases from 42 in 2005.
Councillor Liz Tavener, cabinet member for road safety, said driver error and speed were ‘major contributing factors’ in the rise in fatalities, but the overall reduction in accidents was testament to the success of the partnership’s initiatives.
Inspector Max Williams of the Northamptonshire Police Road Policing Unit added: ‘The casualty reduction partnership continues to look closely at every collision in this county and is proactive in planning engineering, education or enforcement initiatives to deal with any problems identified.’
Pedal cyclists were the only road user category in 2006 to see a rise in KSI accidents, with the figures up 27% on the previous year, from 30 to 38. However, the overall trend since 1994-98 has seen a reduction of 19%. Motorcyclist statistics remain unchanged on 2005, but down 19% since 1994-98.
The partnership has been actively involved in education, with schemes including BikeKraft sessions for motorcyclists which give information and provide riding assistance, and road safety-training programmes in schools.
The Government set targets for a 40% reduction in KSI figures by 2010, and a 50% reduction in the number of children KSI.
