Accident toll on resurfaced bypass sparks major probe

Transport Scotland has launched a major review of an accident blackspot on the A720 Edinburgh City bypass at Dreghorn.

Some 53 people have been injured since a section of the road was resurfaced at a cost of £5.6m in 1999, and traffic engineers are concerned about possible problems with the 850m section of the eastbound roadway.

The bypass carries some 85,000 vehicles a day and is one of the busiest stretches of road in Scotland. However, a recent EuroRAP survey identified the A720 as one of the safest roads in Europe.

A spokeswoman for Transport Scotland said: ‘Where investigations point to the need for remedial measures, we will seek to implement these as quickly as possible. ‘This is the case on the busy A720 at Dreghorn, where we have identified a higher-than-average number of wet weather, minor accidents.’
