Accident damages historic crossing for second time in two years

A historic 18th century bridge over the River Aln in Northumberland has been damaged for the second time in two years, after an accident at the weekend.
Denwick Bridge was repaired two years ago after an accident in which a car damaged railings on both sides. Now the bridge will need repairing again, with costs likely to be substantial, due to the intricate nature of the stone construction.
A Northumberland County Council spokesman said: ‘There have been problems with motorists speeding over this bridge in the past, and although we do not know how this accident happened, we would remind drivers to approach the bridge with care. ‘The accident has caused damage to 13m of bridge railing, and we are installing a concrete barrier to provide protection at the edges. This means traffic lights and single lane traffic.’
