AWC collects more fans

Almost half of all local authorities in England have introduced alternate weekly recycling, in some form. Government figures reveal 169 out of 350 councils are operating or trialling AWC – up from 140 last year.

Shadow local government minister, Eric Pickles, accused the Government of showing ‘contempt’ for the electorate by not publishing the figures until the day before the local elections.

‘Under PM Gordon Brown, the weekly rubbish collection is facing extinction, while council tax bills soar, year on year.’ But environment minister, Joan Ruddock, said central government ‘does not tell local authorities how frequently they should collect waste’.

She added: ‘There would be a justifiable barrage of complaints if Whitehall dictated when people’s bins were emptied.’
