£900M transformation for Hereford centre

Public transport, open spaces and road networks are set to improve in Hereford, under a newly-unveiled £900M project to regenerate the city centre.
The 20-year project, run by ESG Herefordshire, with the assistance of Herefordshire Council and Advantage West Midlands, will provide better, connected routes throughout the centre to help improve the area’s economy, together with the construction of a retail precinct and about 150 new homes.
The development area comprises 40ha of currently under-utilised land which lies north of the city centre, and would connect with the centre, which will also be redeveloped. The creation of a new east-west link road through the development was crucial to the city centre expansion, and was designed to cut congestion almost by half. It would also allow the inner ring road to be ‘tamed’ and turned into an attractive street.
ESG Herefordshire wants to improve accessibility by providing ‘safe, direct and attractive’ routes that encourage walking, cycling and use of public transport. A ‘pedestrian-friendly environment’, structured around a series of new and refurbished public spaces would also be created. These would be connected by a ‘walkable’ network of new streets with mixed-use development, including retail, leisure and residential development.
The proposal acknowledges that some of the area’s peripheral roads are well served by buses serving the country and city, but there was ‘little penetration of buses into the [central] area at the present time’. There are also plans to introduce a park-and-ride scheme for the area and to build a multi-storey car park with 1,500 spaces. ‘The ESG proposals will transform the heart into a modern city centre while retaining its historic core,’ said Mark Pearce, Advantage West Midlands corporate director for economic regeneration.
