£89bn needed to keep Southeast prosperous

South East England Regional Assembly and the Environment Agency have estimated that at least £42bn is needed for investment in flood defences, water resources, waste treatment and countryside protection over the next 20 years.

Members of the assembly’s regional planning committee also believe a further £47bn will be required for other infrastructure investment in transport, health services and schools, if the region is to grow sustainably.

Newly-elected committee chairman and Conservative leader of Surrey Heath District Council, Cllr Moira Gibson, said: ‘Recent flooding demonstrates the importance of adequate investment in infrastructure, including flood defences and water supply. We will continue to press for more investment to make sure the Southeast’s thriving economy keeps going. We need a bigger slice of the budget cake.’
