£80M contract gives Gloucester a cleaner start

Gloucester City Council aims to become one of the country’s cleanest cities, after signing a 15-year, £80M streetcare partnership with Accord.
The private company is now responsible for collecting refuse and recycling, cleaning streets and public toilets, maintaining grounds and open spaces, and looking after parks and play areas. The contract – the largest the council has ever signed – is expected to bring Gloucester into the top performing 25% of councils, in terms of street cleansing and recycling, within four years. Accord’s performance will be judged directly against levels of public satisfaction. To facilitate the service, the council will spend £250,000 on improving public toilets, and £320,000 on new recycling containers. Accord will invest £320,000 on parks and open spaces in the first year, and roll out the green waste scheme – currently operating in 26,000 local homes – across the city in 2008.
Cllr
Andrew Lewis, cabinet member for streetcare, said: ‘This is one of the most fundamental and exciting changes to the delivery of council services we have seen in the city. ‘Residents will have a strong voice in the delivery of services and are being encouraged to play their part to make Gloucester one of the cleanest and greenest in the country.’
