A ‘radical redesign’ of a major London junction would see the creation of a large new public space by decking over a vehicular underpass while scrapping a one-way gyratory system.
Camden has launched a consultation on a £7M scheme drawn up by Sir Terry Farrell and Hyder to make it simpler for pedestrians to cross the junction of Euston Road with Tottenham Court Road by replacing 17 convoluted crossings with eight, simpler ones. Shopping facilities could be provided in the newly created 3,000m
2 space above the underpass.
At a later stage, Tottenham Court Road and Gower Street would be made two-way on all or part of their lengths to both shorten bus journeys and make it easier for pedestrians to cross. But Camden said that this scheme has not yet been costed.
