£65M upgrade gives Liverpool the Edge

A £65M project to upgrade a key route into Liverpool from the M62 will begin next month. Promoter Liverpool Land Development Company has been given the go-ahead for the project after the secretary of state confirmed compulsory purchase orders.

The A5047 Edge Lane corridor will be a dualled route along its length to complement the redevelopment of adjacent sites for business use. The company had to issue CPOs to around half the 420 properties which needed to be demolished to make way for the additional highway space.

This is the first CPO order the regeneration company has taken through to a public inquiry, and it paves the way for the start of ‘a radical and comprehensive regeneration project’ to transform one of Liverpool’s most deprived areas with a new business park and 300 new homes. T

he aim of the £15M highway part of the scheme is to ease severe congestion, while creating better crossing facilities for pedestrians. Framework contractor Alfred McAlpine – one of three chosen to handle a range of highway, remediation, infrastructure and landscaping works over five years (Surveyor, 31 March 2005) – will undertake the work.
