£4.7m Square project will make waves

Blackpool Council has completed the multimillion-pound transformation of the city’s St John’s Square.

The council used Northwest Regional Development Agency investment to create a new £4.7m public realm. The focal point of this is an 11 metre-high sculpture called the Wave, which was designed by artist Lucy Glendinning.

The sculpture and surrounding ‘pebbles’ are lit by LED colour change lights, and other new features include granite paving, circular seating around trees, and a bus shelter.

Cllr Maxine Callow, Blackpool’s cabinet member for tourism and regeneration said: ‘The St John’s Square scheme is part of the wider regeneration of Blackpool – creating high-quality public spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy.’
