£40,000 travel boost for voluntary group

A voluntary organisation in Bolton is to receive £40,000 from Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority to help people with mental health problems build the skills and confidence needed to use public transport.
BAND (Bolton Association Network of Drop-ins), a user-led charity which supports people with severe mental health problems, will use the money to develop a travel training scheme for people across the borough.
Travel training includes a wide range of help and support. Some people need short-term help to familiarise them with how public transport works in their area and to give them the confidence to use it alone. Others need a one-to-one personalised training programme that might take place over a period of weeks or months.
GMPTA's Policy Committee agreed to fund the BAND travel training scheme at their meeting this week. Bolton spokesperson Councillor Nick Peel said: "Travel is a part of everyday life and the ability to travel is something that most people take for granted. However, for some, independent travel can be a real challenge.
"I'm delighted we can provide money for travel training schemes across Greater Manchester, including this money to BAND. I hope many more people will be able to make bus, train and tram journeys confidently, safely and by themselves as a result of this funding."
Last year, GMPTA awarded BASIC (Brain and Spinal Injury Centre) in Salford, The Together Trust in Stockport and Bury People First a share of £120,000 to kick off the Travel Training schemes which have proved successful so far.
