£3M capital investment will bring a sparkle to Liverpool

An extra £3M has been awarded to clean up Liverpool ahead of 2008, when it will be European Capital of Culture.

The council will now have about £7M to spend on the Look of the city programme to make sure Liverpool looks its best for the showcase year.

The money will be used to disguise the city’s more unsightly buildings, steam-clean dirty footways and reduce litter.

City leaders were worried tourists would come away from Liverpool with memories about it looking grubby. The extra £3M is made up of a £1.5M grant from the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), £1M of council money, and £400,000 of private sponsorship.

Cllr Mike Storey, executive member for regeneration, said: ‘This extra money means we can extend the programme and look at sites outside the city centre. The scheme will leave a legacy for future years.’
