£34M unearthed for Pitt recommendations

At least £34.5M will be set aside for implementing the final recommendations of Sir Michael Pitt’s report on the summer floods, Hilary Benn has announced.

The environment secretary said the money would come from the £2.15bn total government flood and coastal erosion spend over the next three years. Benn announced that the Environment Agency would receive £1.8bn of this funding over the same period, 2008/09 to 2010/11.

The EA will be responsible for allocating this funding across all operating authorities, and overseeing the programme of works to deliver a range of tougher targets for new and improved defences and projects.

The £1.8bn will fund all on-the-ground flood-management work. Benn said the new targets for delivery of the capital programme would include improving the protection of 145,000 households over the three-year period, including 45,000 of those most at risk.
