£30M Hull incinerator gets the thumbs-up

Plans to build a £30M incinerator in Hull have finally been given the green light, despite local concerns that it could prove a health risk.

Kingston-upon-Hull City Council had already granted planning permission but had been asked by the Waste Recycling Group (WRG) to amend planning conditions to allow temporary storage of hazardous waste on-site.

The original permission prohibited storage on the site at Saltend, and this had been welcomed as a part victory by campaigners opposed to the incinerator. They now claimed part of the site had been flooded during June’s deluge and any reoccurence would send hazardous waste into local watercourses.

But WRG argued the condition prohibiting storage of hazardous waste meant the facility could not operate as the end product fell into the bracket of hazardous waste.
