£25 London congestion charge for gas-guzzlers

Cars with the highest greenhouse gas emissions from ‘Chelsea tractors’ to high-powered sports cars and luxury limousines face a daily charge of £25 to drive in the central London congestion charge zone from 27 October.

Vehicles which emit more than 225g of CO2 per kilometre will pay the new, higher charge, while cars with the lowest CO2 emissions of less than 120g of CO2 per kilometre will receive a full discount.

The higher charges were first signalled by mayor Ken Livingstone in 2006 (Click here to read story). and has been welcomed by environmental campaigners, but slated by AA president, Edmund King, who claimed: ‘Ironically, the new changes may lead to more congestion.

‘Once London is teeming with sub-120g/km cars, the charge will eventually be applied to them because the mayor can’t make up his mind whether this is a congestion charge or an environmental charge scheme.’

Simon Barnett, of London Living Streets, Said: ‘Anyone walking around London can see that the congestion charge has made a real difference for people on foot. ‘Directly, it has reduced noise and the impact of motor traffic on pedestrians.

‘Indirectly, the reduction in motor traffic has allowed a start to be made on progressive schemes to reallocate road space to pedestrians. ‘These schemes have started to tip the balance back in favour of people on foot.’
