21st century’s first new town turns planners green

A new draft masterplan for the first new town of the 21st century has gone on show for public consultation in Cambridgeshire.
The masterplan for Northstowe, aimed at addressing Cambridge’s housing shortage, has been revisited to place more emphasis on sustainability, in light of ‘increased awareness of the impact of climate change’.
Promoters English Partnerships and Gallgher have taken on board the principles of South Cambridgeshire District Council’s planning policy framework.
‘English Partnerships and Gallagher have reappraised Northstowe, driven by the need to create a community with renewable energy sources, high energy efficiency, low carbon emissions, water efficiency and waste minimisation,’ said John Lewis, regional director for English Partnerships.
‘At the same time, it has been necessary to review the housing numbers as the need for new homes in the sub-region has continued to grow.’ Plans include a network of sustainable travel routes to encourage alternatives to the car, around 9,500 homes, a town centre, and two main employment areas. One-third of the total Northstowe area will be open space, with large green areas and parks, and 20 children’s play areas planned.
