20mph zone planned in town centre makeover

Staffordshire County Council is proposing to cut congestion and improve the pedestrian environment for those using Stafford town centre.

The highways team shared the ideas with the community last week at a special information day. One of the biggest changes proposed is making most of the town centre a 20mph zone. Bridge Street is also zoned for a complete makeover.

At present, drivers are using South Walls and Mill Bank as a ‘rat-run’ through the town. This not only chokes the town’s centre, it is also putting pedestrians at risk, the council believes.

The proposals will channel traffic away from the centre. The public consultation closes on 5 November.
