A new machine to improve safety and reduce congestion at roadworks on high-speed roads was unveiled by the Minister for Road Safety Dr Stephen Ladyman.
The giant new barrier transfer machine can lift 12t of concrete safety barriers for motorway roadworks into place at a speed of 7mph.
The vehicle, which weighs 25t, has been brought to the UK from America for trials on the Highways Agency network of England's major roads.
It has been leased for two years at a cost of around £1M and will be first used in the autumn, during maintenance work during the construction of the A21 Sevenoaks bypass.
