An £18.2M scheme to remove one of the biggest bottlenecks in Liverpool has been given the go ahead by transport minister Sadiq Khan.
The Hall Lane Strategic Gateway scheme will deliver an east-west highway into the city centre from the M62, connecting Merseyside to Cheshire and Greater Manchester. Replacement of the current convoluted routes, some of which run through residential streets, will take traffic away from communities. The Department for Transport will invest up to £17.1M in the scheme, which will begin in October for completion by July 2011.
The minister said: ‘Removing the current bottleneck will cut journey times from the city centre to the M62 and beyond. This will reduce the economic burden of congestion on local businesses, as well as attracting visitors, investment and assisting recovery in Liverpool.’
The new gateway will support regeneration of the Kensington area of the city and improve access to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, as well as a number of schools and community centres.
‘It will also allow for improved public transport and improving safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists,’ Khan said.
The scheme will also include extensive landscaping, including tree planting and improved lighting.
