£18M for project to protect Glasgow residents from flooding

Glasgow City Council is to receive £18M from the Scottish Government towards the construction of the White Cart flood-prevention scheme, which will protect more than 1,750 homes and businesses.

Environment minister, Michael Russell, last week announced a further installment of the grant to fund works to be carried out prior to the defences, including the construction of storage reservoirs at Blackhouse, Kirkland Bridge and Kittoch Bridge in the upper catchment of the White Cart. He said grants totalling £18M would be provided over the next four years to fund this phase of the scheme.

The minister said: ‘I have been assured that Glasgow City Council has adopted a holistic catchment approach in providing a sustainable solution to flooding, which will also increase access to the amenity of the river throughout the south side of Glasgow.

Due to concern over the loss of riverside trees, ‘the council plans extensive planting with indigenous species of trees which will improve natural habitats and enhance bio-diversity,’ he added.

In addition to the three water storage sites, the scheme will involve 8km of low wall construction along the banks of the river within Glasgow. It will reduce the present risk of flooding to less than 0.5% annual risk, taking into account the impacts of climate changes over the life of the scheme.
