£12M upgrade of crucial Scottish link under way

The first phase of a £12M upgrade programme on the key route between Scotland’s two biggest cities gets under way later this month.

From 21 July, for five weeks, work will concentrate on improving the section of M8 between Blairmains to Blairmuckhill – between junctions 5 and 4 – which is used by almost 60,000 vehicles a day.

The programme will ensure the motorway, which was built in the 1970s and now regularly carries more than 57,000 vehicles a day, continues to operate safely for years to come.

Stephen Breslin, Transport Scotland’s project manager said: ‘These works are part of our ongoing reconstruction programme of the M8 linking Edinburgh and Glasgow. This particular stretch of motorway was originally constructed in 1973 and is now nearing the end of its useful life.’ Trunk road operating company BEAR Scotland is designing the programme of works and will supervise the contractor for this phase, Tarmac.
