Work has started on the long-awaited £12M safety improvements to the A66 at Long Newton, between Darlington and Middlesbrough.
The project comprises the construction of a bridge and new slip roads, allowing local traffic to cross the dual carriageway and join the main road safely.
The work will also include a new roundabout and link road to Mill Lane, and a new link road to the nearby village of Elton, aimed at improving access for cyclists, pedestrians and local traffic.
The new bridge and the approach embankments are to be constructed over glacial material that is several metres thick. This is to act as a safety precaution due to a possibility of settlement of the bridge and embankment.
Amey’s Owen Williams’ business team is behind the design of the scheme.
