£12M for northern route

The North Middlesbrough Accessibility scheme has gained £12M in government funding, transport minister Rosie Winterton, has announced.

The scheme comprises a number of improvements within the area, including a new link road with pedestrian and cycle facilities between Newport and Riverside Park Road; widening of the existing A66 westbound and eastbound carriageways between Newport and the A19 interchanges; and the widening of the circulatory carriageway at Newport roundabout with increased traffic signal control.

The Department for Transport will provide £12.3M, with Middlesbrough Council and other key stakeholders meeting the remainder of the total £13.5M cost. Construction is due to start shortly, with completion due by the end of 2009.
