£10.7M cash boost for top 10 congestion-busting areas

The 10 largest urban areas in England are to receive £10.7M through the Government’s urban congestion performance fund, after exceeding congestion-tackling targets.

London is to receive the largest chunk of the second tranche of funding, at £3.9M.

The West Midlands and South Yorkshire are to net just over £1M each, and Greater Manchester £973,000. West Yorkshire, Tyne & Wear, Merseyside, Bristol, Nottingham and Leicester are to share the remaining money.

The Department for Transport’s public service agreement target is for a 4.4% increase in travel to be accommodated with an average person journey time increase of 3.6% a mile, by 2010-11.

Transport minister, Paul Clark, said current data suggested the targets would be met. The performance fund is worth a total of £60M over four years. A total of £22.7M has now been paid to the 10 areas, and a further £35M is available over the next two financial years.
