£100 fine to deter Metrolink dodgers

Greater Manchester’s Metrolink is increasing its penalty fare to £100 from next month, in a new drive against fare evaders.

With no conductors, Manchester’s trams have long been seen as prime targets for dodgers, and the squad of revenue inspectors was increased from 36 to 48 when the operation passed from Serco to Stagecoach, two years ago.

The penalties at present range from £10 for a first offence to £80 for the fourth. Posters are now on display on trams and at stops, and leaflets are being handed out to passengers.

New ticket machines are being installed across the network, after complaints by travellers that they could often not buy tickets because the machines were out of order.

Philip Purdy, GMPTE’s Metrolink Director, said: ‘The new £100 standard fare sends out a strong message to passengers – buy a ticket or face the consequences.’
