1% levy for flood-hit county

Council taxpayers in Gloucestershire are to pay a 1.1% levy to pay for flood-prevention measures, including better drainage.

The flood levy will raise £6.1M for flood prevention works, of which £4M will be for capital investment and £2.1M for revenue spending. The decision comes after last summer’s flooding left the council with costs of £35M, and the likelihood of further floods occurring in the future.

Cllr Ray Theodoulou, cabinet member for resources, presented the budget report to the council. He said: ‘The council’s scrutiny review and our residents have all asked for more investment to improve our drainage systems, and the flood levy will allow us to do that.’
